Alola Foundation Gift Certificates

The Gift Certificate Campaign has been run for the past 3 years and aims to raise awareness of and funding for important programs operated by the Alola Foundation in Timor-Leste.  A description of the certificates and their underlying programs is set out below.

£20 Maternity Pack Certificate
Even amid the recent unrest in Timor-Leste, still the most dangerous thing a woman can do is get pregnant.  Up to 800 women per 100,000 do not survive childbirth, while 85 babies die in every 1000 live births. The Alola "Maternity Packs" project aims to encourage women to give birth with a trained health worker and thus help reduce the high mortality rates for Timor-Leste's mothers and their babies.  By purchasing a Maternity Packs Certificate you'll be providing a new mother who attends a “Baby Friendly” Hospital with a Maternity Pack which includes the basic essentials for the mother and her baby - clothing, sanitary items and nappies - as well as important information on breast-feeding and postnatal care.  Money raised from these Certificates also support Alola's maternal and child health program to provide breastfeeding counselling, as well as funding community support to encourage women to give birth in a hospital or health facility.

£30 Livelihood Certificate
The Livelihood Starter Kit Certificate will support the work of the Alola Foundation in developing opportunities for women to achieve economic independence.

Employment will be a liberating experience for many women who otherwise might be  confined to their homes. With this contribution to the family income women have a stronger voice in decisionmaking, on issues such as marriage, family size, education and health. The women employed  also gain from their employment, both financially and socially

As a consequence of the violence and unrest in Timor-Leste,and of continued fear and insecurity,  there are many female headed households.  Many of these households are in temporary shelter, displaced from their homes in camps or staying with host families.  This situation will not be easily resolved, and re-establishment of life back in their original communities will take a long time.

The Livelihood certificate will provide tools, materials and support to women to enable them to earn a living through work in the textile trade, primarily sewing or weaving.   Producer groups throughout Timor are able to provide for their children, support each other, and improve the prospects for their communities while remaining in their own village.   Alola also supports these women through marketing traditional tais products, using sewers to produce items required in the maternity packs and supporting skills development.  Alola is a member of Fair Trade and is working to ensure that producers in Timor are able to earn a viable livelihood from their craft.  In addition to creating a livelihood for women, the weaving of traditional tais also helps preserve an important aspect of Timor-Leste’s cultural heritage.

The Livelihood kits contain materials for weaving (cottons, scissor, cutter, loom fittings) and for sewing (cotton, scissor, cutter, sewing machine oil,meter/tape measure, and fabric).

Our first recipients will be the widows of the massacre of May 2006, women whom Alola has worked with since then, and who are wanting to establish new livelihoods for themselves.  This support is the key to independence for them and their children.

£40 Alola Scholarship Gift Certificate provides a gift that lasts a lifetime - a chance for an East Timorese child to read, to write and to learn. In East Timor two thirds of women aged 15-60 and almost half of the men are illiterate, destined to a life deprived of the benefits that even the most basic reading and writing skills can give. The Alola Foundation Scholarship program aims to remove the economic and cultural barriers that keep so many young Timorese from starting and completing an eduction. Each certificate purchased will provide a 12-month scholarship to a young Timorese girl or boy, supporting the costs associated with a full year's schooling.  Students are supported directly through scholarships that cover fees, books, uniforms if required and make it possible for children to attend school at primary, secondary and tertiary levels.

So this Christmas, purchase of a gift on behalf of your friends and loved ones that keeps on giving.
